ASHA Schools Survey: Caseload and Workload Information Report 2024

By: Jennifer Cook, MS, CCC-SLP, TSHA SEAL

Recently the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) released the 2024 schools survey information with an update on current caseloads across the country. The median caseload across the country was 50, with the largest median caseload of 78 in Indiana and the smallest median caseload of 32 in New York. Texas, unfortunately, reported the second highest amount with a median caseload size of 65. ASHA also reported what respondents felt was a manageable caseload size, with 40 being considered as manageable across the country. Texas respondents reported a caseload of 50 as being manageable.

The survey also reported what speech-language pathologists (SLPs) felt were barriers to a manageable caseload size and included:

  • Shortage of SLPs (26%)
  • Lack of support from administration (12%)
  • Difficulty with dismissal of students (10%)
  • District or state policy (10%)
  • Resistance from parents (4%)
  • Lack or shortage of SLP assistants (1%)

"Other" was noted by 15% of respondents, and when asked to give open-ended responses, those responses included reasons such as case management responsibilities, travel, complexity of student needs, and vast amounts of paperwork.

Additionally, 23% indicated that they had no barriers to a manageable caseload because they considered their current caseload size to be manageable at present.

The survey also included information on various types of interventions, weekly activities, and how SLPs handle missed sessions.

The report is a great resource to look at your work patterns and workload compared to others across the nation. It is also an indicator of how hard school-based SLPs are working in Texas to get to manageable workloads.

TSHA has some great resources on the TSHA Public School Resources page including eligibility templates and information on service delivery models.

You also can access the ASHA caseload/workload calculator for some excellent data to present to administrators.

The entire ASHA school survey report is available here: ASHA school survey report 2024.
