COVID-19 and Telepractice

Greetings, Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) members! We are in uncertain times, and so many of us are scrambling to find solutions to unprecedented situations.

The TSHA Telepractice Committee has been monitoring the recent development of concerns, options, and plans regarding remote speech-language and audiology service delivery. Many schools, agencies, and providers are considering telepractice and seeking resources to implement this method. Ethically, many factors are involved when utilizing telepractice as a service delivery method, and these factors include far more than just using the right technology. State laws are in place to protect the consumer from compromised services. Client candidacy for telepractice, privacy, and safety must be addressed. Appropriate internet connections and data upload and download speeds are crucial at the provider and client site in order for “same as in-person” interactions. For many, telepractice is a new frontier. Specific training with technology is necessary. Client access, buy-in, and participation by significant others can make or break even the best of plans and set-ups. And, reimbursement is at risk as third-party payers determine if they cover telepractice.
