53rd Annual Convention: April 2-4, 2009
Austin Convention Center - Austin, Texas




The TSHA 2009 Convention will take on the Live Music Capital of the World in 2009 with a theme centered around music and communication! TSHA will be "Tuning In..." to its members and the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology with great speakers and events.

Keynote Speaker

Robert Rummel-Hudson will be this year’s keynote speaker. Robert is the author of Schuyler’s Monster: A Father’s Journey with His Wordless Daughter. This book tells the story of raising a little girl with a disability and learning to become the father she needs. Robert has been writing online since 1995. During that time, his work has been recognized by the Diarist Awards and featured in articles in the Austin Chronicle, the Irish Times, the New Haven Register, the Dallas Morning News, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Robert and his family currently live in Plano, Texas, where Schuyler attends a special class for children who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Most of her days are now spent in mainstream classes with neurotypical children her age.The Opening Keynote Session and Breakfast will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 8:00am.


Major Speakers
Gregory L. Lof, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, an academic affiliate of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. His research, teaching and clinical interests primarily are with children who have articulation/phonological (speech sound) disorders. He currently is a member on ASHA’s Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders that is conducting evidence-based systematic reviews of oral motor exercises. Dr. Lof will present on For Clinicians: An Articulation/Phonology Update on Thursday, April 2, 2009.

Robert E. Owens, Jr. Ph.D. (“Dr. Bob”), is a New York State Distinguished Teaching Professor of Communication Disorders at State University of New York at Geneseo where he teaches courses in language development and language disorders. He is the author of Language Development, An Introduction (7 editions), Language Disorders, A Functional Approach (5 editions), Program for the Acquisition of Language with the Severely Impaired (PALS), Help Your Baby Talk, Introducing the New Shared Communication Method, and Queer Kids, The Challenge & Promise for Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Youth. Dr. Bob will present on Functional Language that Works for Speech-Language Pathologists and Children on Friday, April 3, 2009.

Alex Johnson, Ph.D., is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA. Prior to accepting this position in July 2008, he was Professor and Chair of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Johnson’s interest broadly include clinical and research issues in communicative disorders, particularly medical speech-language pathology, stuttering, and human literacy. He has publications in the areas of language disorders in adults and poststroke aphasia. He has published two books, Vocal Arts Medicine (1993) with Michael Benninger and Barbara Jacobson and Medical Speech-Language Pathology: A Practitioner’s Guide (1998 and 2007) with Barbara Jacobson. Dr. Johnson will present on Medical SLP Pathology: Best Practice in an Evidence-Based World on Saturday, April 4, 2009.
